THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

Volume up ⬆️ The zebras have come again. Every night, they graze right up to my tent, despite a low wall meters away meant to keep them at a distance. I realize in the past 18 months I have learned to tell the victorious roar of a lioness, calling her males for dinner (she’s the hunter in this relationship) the squeal of a baboon sensing a leopard, the repetitive call of hyena (different from its cackle when scavenging a kill), the never-ending, high-pitched echo of a wildebeest, the loud rip and chomp of an elephant and the more subtle bite and chew of a buffalo. Not to mention the domestic dogs in the distant villages guarding Maasai cattle. There are some sounds I hear at night, perk up, alerted. Others, like these zebras, I put my head down and go back to sleep...
